The Baffin long-cuff mitten displays a beautiful beadwork design on the gauntlet. These mittens are named for the English navigator, explorer, and cartographer William Baffin. Baffin was primarily known for his attempt to find a northwest passage from Atlantic to the Pacific, during the course of which he was the first European to discover Baffin Bay situated between Canada and Greenland. By the completion of his 1616 voyage, Baffin held out no hope of an ice-free passage and the area remained unexplored for another two centuries. Over time, his account came to be doubted until it was confirmed by John Ross' 1818 voyage.
They are hand-sewn in the USA from high-quality grey suede leather with hand-stitched beadwork on the gauntlet and are lined with Polartec® High Loft insulation. Working directly with a tannery in the USA, we developed a suede leather, injected with silicone during the tanning process for further waterproofing, that is extremely durable yet retains great dexterity. The length and cut of the mitten allows for a jacket to slide fully inside without bunching while providing a close fit that protects the wrists and hands from snow on the heaviest of powder days.
As each leather mitten is hand-sewn and uses natural materials, every mitten will possess slight variation in the look of the leather, beadwork, and fur trim. Astis embraces these subtle differences and views them as unique mittens more akin to works of art.
